To understand the possible implications of the new power arrangement, it is critical to understand the nature of the new clerisy. Unlike traditional capitalist power groups, including private-sector organized labor, the clerisy’s power derives not primarily through economic influence per se but through its growing power to inform opinion and regulate everything from how people live to what industries will be allowed to grow, or die.
The clerisy shares a kind of mission which Bell described as the rational “ordering of mass society.” Like the bishops and parish priests of the feudal past, or the public intellectuals, university dons and Anglican worthies of early 19th century Britain, today’s clerisy attempts to impart on the masses today’s distinctly secular “truths,” on issues ranging from the nature of justice, race and gender to the environment. Academics, for example, increasingly regulate speech along politically correct lines, and indoctrinate the young while the media shape their perceptions of reality.
Most distinctive about the clerisy is their unanimity of views. On campus today, there is broad agreement on a host of issues from gay marriage, affirmative action and what are perceived as “women’s” issues to an almost religious environmentalism that is contemptuous toward traditional industry and anything that smacks of traditional middle class suburban values. Composers, artists, or architects in a compound began to have the instincts of the medieval clergy, much of whose activity was devoted exclusively to separating itself from the mob. For mob, substitute bourgeoise—and here you have the spirit of avant-gardism in the twentieth century. Once inside a compound, an artist became part of a clerisy, to use an old term for an intelligensia with clerical persumptions” (Tom Wolfe,From Bauhaus to Our House, p. 14).
I prefer ‘Hipster Clerisy’ and where do we start to look at this particular clerical class?*
XOXO Festival seems like a good place to start. Tech media darlings from 2012 to present, XOXO Festival held in a hipster church in Portland XOXO Fest tags itself as, “An experimental festival celebrating independently-produced art and technology.” Actually it’s a pretty standard conference featuring people talking with pitch decks behind them and larded with hipster bait such as: Portland! Free 3rd Wave coffee, artisanal BBQ and ice cream from a place called ‘Salt and Straw’. This is the conference for people who think TED has gone too populous.
I’m sure all that food is delicious.
From XOXO’s twitter feed look at all the diversity on display often found among the hipster clerisy. Some of these people even went to elite universities NOT on the East Coast. One guy has a tie (he makes up for it with a smart waistcoat).
Some of these people don’t even live in Brooklyn or the Bay Area!
How do we know these folks are ‘hipster clerisy’ Like pornography, you just know it when you see it.
Some of the speakers are certainly working on cool stuff. We know Kevin Kelly works on Cool Tools. Many of them are taste makers and early adopters. Is the clerical impulse for control present in this group? Is this an “intelligentsia with clerical presumptions.”? Is XOXO a representative face behind the anti-gamer crusade so trendy of late and other fronts on the culture wars?
Coming up shortly on Consumptionblog – #Gamergate, efficacy and message control. Music for your Throat Chakra! And much much more.
*just as there is more than one of everything, there is more of one clerical class in the US, the West and in other parts of the world where other people might live.
“So what is Gamergate “really” about? I think this is the sort of question a philosopher of language would tear apart and scatter the remnants of to the wind, because it lacks any real referent. You guys refuse to appoint a leader or write up a platform or really do any of the things real-life, adult “movements” do.”

Querida Jesse,
Have you ever been to a protest or protest organizing meeting before? In particular left wing or anti-war protests out on the streets and corners? Very little leadership if any. Very little message control.
Even the recent climate march in NYC lavished with money and professional organizers you could find a thousand messages and a thousand different groups. Including a lot of whackos. Who was the leader of that march?
Outside of ‘climate change bad, do stuff’ what exactly was their message or platform?
This week or so Consumptionblog shall endeavor to lose five things. All these things to be lost will be digital in nature. Can you lose digital ephemera and will anyone really notice?
After Ello we say goodbye to Boing Boing.
Boing Boing. I first consumed you in a magazine shop in Hillcrest on University between 5th and 6th along with a copy of Future Sex. Maybe 1993 or 1994. I was in high school. Over the years you explained a lot of things to me. You helped me discover weirdness and counterculture about tech and internet stuff.
But now we’ve drifted away. Frankie DuBoyz recently called Grantland the “Geographical Center of the American Middlebrow”. I guess as an insult. Most certainly as an insult. But that is what Grantland is explicitly aiming for and they execute it as well or better than anyone else. You, Boing Boing – have you found your way to sloppy buzzfeed middlebrow on purpose? Because that is where you’ve ended up. One day’s content turns up the usual:
Scratching consumer itches.
Plausible deniability advertisements.
Bland, orthodox left over left politics.
RIYL is a pretty good podcast.
I don’t like your demographic. Your tee girl says it all.
Boing Boing. Sadly after over 20 years I officially lose you.

First on the chopping block ‘Ello’:
Cool kids suddenly had invites and @’s for me. Guess what? All those invites and @’s came through Facebook.
Once on Ello other warning signs appeared this would be the land of non-specific niche and boredom.
The founders’ idea of a legitimate consumer good was an obnoxiously named $2500 bicycle.
Less functionality than twitter didn’t help.
Tribe 2.0 with Grimes fans.
Ello – I hearby lose you.
Dear Medium,
Why am I getting coffee and twitter stories from 2013 on Medium?
Why can’t I simply look at the newest stories and such. This is the future, not 2013, not my preferences. I want ‘new’ bent to my preferences.
I might want something outside of a preference for stories on coffee. Enjoying a cup of coffee in 2013 is so different than enjoying a cup of coffee in 2014. I grind my own beans in 2014. I do a pour over or cold brew. No more 1819.
No more 2013. Reading tweets from 2013 is ridiculous. Reading tweets from July of 2014 is ridiulous. There is no such thing as ‘catching up on Twitter’. There is only two seconds ago, controversy and forgotten about.

In line with one of the 10 Principles, Gifting, an authorized product from Burning Man has been given away for free this week.
Written under the non de guerre ‘Sean Kemp’, the product was a collaboration between the now obliterated “Burning Man Arts Foundation” and the “Vogon Foundation of Soviet Canuckistan”.
“I started creating this product back in 2004,” sighed “Sean”, I finished the first product version in 2004 actually. Since then I’ve been going back and forth with the Burning Man Sexy Censorship Board (BMSCB) and the Vogon Committee for Publishing until this year. I’m never creating another product again.”
After initially selling for the Burning Man price of $9.99 its now being given away here, on Consumptionblog for free:
The End
Dear Beloved Burners,
He is a privileged white guy with a beard and an MBA.
He’ll spend too much at the Walmart in Reno for a bunch of stuff he’ll never use.
He’ll get a bit dusty and see a bunch of awesome art.
He’ll get all pill’d up and dance for six hours at White Ocean one night.
He’ll yell and curse during Exodus on Monday.
He’ll fit right in.
